Detroit Cristo Rey High School is a coed Catholic high school that provides high-quality college preparatory education to students from economically disadvantaged families in Detroit. They recently received a grant to provide free eye exams and eyeglasses to all of their student population. Heritage Optical, Detroit’s premier vision and eyecare provider partnered in this initiative to provide the exams, glasses, and referrals to a specialist if needed. This Community Partner initiative was very successful!

According to the American Optometric Association, one in four school age student have an undetected vision condition that can negatively impact learning. A student’s vision is essential to their success in school. When their vision suffers, chances are their schoolwork does, too. A comprehensive eye exam not only ensures that common vision problems like poor eye coordination, lazy eye and farsightedness (not being able to see close up) are checked, but also can detect signs of chronic health and eye diseases. Most of which, if caught early, are treatable.
